Semarang, Central Java – Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) through Patriot Expedition Team (TEP UNDIP) Team 15 realized a tangible innovation in Papua. The team designed an integrated agriculture and livestock cluster in Woslay Village, Senggi District, Keerom Regency.
This collaborative program between UNDIP and the Ministry of Transmigration aims to optimize local potential. The initiative also focuses on boosting productivity and building independent, sustainable regional systems.
Circular Economy Integration in Farming and Livestock
This cluster implements a circular economy approach connecting cattle farming and agriculture. Livestock waste is processed into organic fertilizer to enrich farmland. Conversely, crop yields and forage grass serve as livestock feed.
“This system enhances local resource efficiency while reducing reliance on external supplies,” explained the design team.
The designed cluster area encompasses several key facilities:
-
Cut-and-carry grass fields and pasture land.
-
Waste processing facilities and feed warehouses.
-
Specialized pens for sick cattle and pregnant dams.
Mitigating Inbreeding and Strengthening Institutions
Team 15 collaborated with Team 3 to strengthen livestock farmer institutions. The primary focus includes improving genetic quality and managing livestock reproduction.
This step is crucial to mitigate the risks of inbreeding (close breeding) which has historically degraded local cattle populations. Head of the Pioneer Group, Hari, stated that this group emerged from community commitment.
“This pioneer group embodies the determination of the transmigrant community to develop an independent livestock sub-sector without relying on handouts,” he expressed.
Drone Technology Utilization and SDG Contributions
For regional layout planning, TEP UNDIP mapped demonstration plot land using drone technology. This technology comprehensively surveyed contours and area dimensions.
Physical realization began through community gotong royong for land clearing and bed preparation on Wednesday (Sept 2). This program supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
-
SDG 1 & 2: No Poverty and Zero Hunger.
-
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
-
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
-
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
